The Starke Ayres green bean variety STAR 2054 has been the choice of many Eswatini growers for many years. It consistently delivers good yields of relatively thin, refined pods and is well-suited to local conditions. Recent times have seen a small but increasing requirement for slightly thicker pods, and the old favourite STAR 2001 has stepped up to provide this. Although STAR 2054 remains the most widely planted variety, STAR 2001 provides a reliable alternative where a thicker, bulkier bean is required. One producer that has introduced STAR 2001 is Karen du Plessis of Satara, located some 20km from Manzini. Their clients include NAMBOARD and Themba Dlamini from Wakitsi Farming, both of whom have been very happy with the specs and quality delivered by STAR 2001. The high level of management applied to the fields and the quality of the final product can be seen from the pictures. No leaf diseases were seen and plant growth was excellent. With the high yields achieved from the well-managed plantings, everyone wins!
