Aldina* is a new medium-early, intermediate F1 hybrid onion variety from Starke Ayres, which again set high expectations last season.
Over the past four years, Aldina was trialled extensively in comparison with other commercial onion varieties in the Koue Bokkeveld and Sandveld regions, and gave excellent results. Aldina was very competitive, and showed better plant vigour and yield potential than others.
The strong, vigorous plants produced firm, round bulbs of excellent quality, colour and size. Aldinas' dark-brown colour is very attractive for both local and export markets that prefer a bronze appearance.
Typically, Aldina would be transplanted from early August in the Sandveld region, and from the end of August in the Koue Bokkeveld region. Bulbs should be ready for harvest 110 – 120 days after transplant, depending on the geographical area.
The benefit of high marketable yield percentage, excellent quality and strong plant vigour are important for making Aldina part of any grower’s planting programme in the future!
